The original St Helens Town was established in the early 1900s and played at Park Road. They joined the Lancashire League in 1901, before switching to Division Two of the Lancashire Combination in 1903.[1] After finishing fifth in their first season, they were promoted to Division One, but were immediately relegated after finishing bottom of the table in 1904–05. They were promoted again as runners-up in 1908–09. They left the Combination in 1914.
The current club was established in 1946 when a group of local businessmen purchased the Hoghton Road ground. Bert Trautmann played for the newly-formed club before turning professional with Manchester City. They joined Division Two the Lancashire Combination in 1949, winning it in 1950–51 to earn promotion to Division One. However, they were relegated at the end of the following season. The club remained in Division Two until a third-place finish in 1964–65 was enough to earn promotion back to Division One. In 1970–71 they won the Combination for the first time.[1]
In 1975 they club switched to the Cheshire County League, which they remained members of until it merged into the newly-formed North West Counties League in 1982, with the club placed in Division One. In 1986–87 they entered the FA Vase for the first time, reaching the final at Wembley Stadium, where they defeated local rivals Warrington Town 3–2.
In 2000 the club left Hoghton Road and moved to Knowsley Road, the home of St Helens RLFC. When Knowsley Road closed in 2010 the club moved to a groundshare with Ashton Town whilst they await the opening of the new St Helens Stadium.
